The HeartBrothers allowed me to stay three affordable nights in Boston near my husband, who has been inpatient at Tufts Medical Center, for coming up on six months now. Living an hour away, I typically can visit one time per week. So this time together was beneficial for both of us.

LAUNCHING THE DREAM

Launched in 2020, HeartBrothers House is the culmination of a dream born when we were recovering from our own heart transplants years ago—we had witnessed first-hand how challenging it was to cover spouses’ astronomical lodging costs as they traveled back and forth while we received critical care, had LVADs implanted, waited for donor hearts, and recovered from our transplants.

As we told WCVB-5 in this TV interview, Heart Failure doctors, nurses, and social workers have consistently identified short-term housing costs and availability as the greatest gap in care for Heart Failure patients and their families. Since launching the HeartBrothers in 2014, families approaching us for financial support have most frequently cited the soaring costs of hotels and short-term housing near Heart Failure Centers as their biggest non-medical economic burden.

ELIGIBILITY

Patients must have a Heart Failure, LVAD, or Heart Transplant diagnosis and be currently receiving treatment/testing at Tufts Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, or another Boston heart transplant center.
Patients receiving outpatient treatment must have at least two hospital/treatment visits in the week(s) of your stay.
Minimum 3-night, maximum 14-night stay while the patient continues to meet eligibility criteria.
All day 3 stays will incur a $50 cleaning fee.
All guests must be US citizens with a permanent US address.
Guests must not have any infectious disease (cold, flu, COVID).
