NDIANAPOLIS —The family of a 27-year-old racing driver who passed away Sunday revealed his death helped save lives because he was listed as an organ donor.

Bryan Clauson’s family revealed Wednesday in a heart-wrenching Facebook post that Clauson was an organ donor. “It shouldn’t have surprised us. All of us have felt Bryan’s generosity throughout his life,” Clauson’s family wrote on his racing page. “The gift of life is the most amazing gesture and Bryan will live on not only through us and all the people he touched along the way, but from the lucky individuals that will benefit from Bryan making a decision to be a donor.”

Clauson, 27, died Sunday in Lincoln. Nebraska, after he crashed in the annual Belleville Nationals in Kansas Saturday night. A four-time USAC national champion, Clauson was a three-time winner and the defending champion at Belleville.

The family said five other people were saved due to Clauson’s death and that they were proud of Clauson for making that decision.

“If you are a donor, thank you. If you are not, please consider for a moment becoming one,” Clauson’s family wrote. “We have seen first hand how amazing it feels on both sides of the coin. It is the greatest gift that one person can give another.”

Clauson is survived by his parents, Tim and Di, sister Taylor and fiancee, Lauren Stewart. A memorial service in his honor will take place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at a date to be announced.

"Pat and Bob were living proof we would survive...that this was all part of our journey. After meeting the HeartBrothers, I remember Nick saying that when all this was over he would be a HeartBrother too. It made me smile because it showed me Nick had not given up hope despite how sick he was...he was thinking about our future."
