Witnessing Hope in Action: HeartBrothers Board Tours TransMedics
On June 29, the HeartBrothers Foundation Board of Directors had the incredible opportunity to visit the TransMedics headquarters in Andover, Massachusetts, for a firsthand look at the innovation transforming organ transplantation. As our Platinum Plus Sponsor, TransMedics has been an invaluable partner in helping HeartBrothers provide critical support to heart failure patients and their families. This visit gave our board a unique opportunity to see the lifesaving work behind that partnership in action.
The highlight of the day was touring the National OCS Program (NOP), where we witnessed donor organs being carefully coordinated, monitored, and prepared for transport to their new recipients across the country. Watching organs in real time on the way to their new homes was nothing short of extraordinary. Every heartbeat represented hope, every decision represented teamwork, and every transport represented another family receiving the gift of a second chance.

For four members of the HeartBrothers Board, the experience carried an even deeper meaning. As heart transplant survivors, they once stood on the receiving end of this remarkable process. Walking through the facility, knowing that a similar journey had once given each of them another chance at life, was both emotional and inspiring. It served as a powerful reminder that behind every organ recovery is a patient waiting, a family hoping, and a future forever changed.
During our visit, we also learned more about the groundbreaking Organ Care System (OCS™), which keeps donor hearts functioning in a warm, beating, near-physiologic state during transportation. By preserving organs outside the body in this way, the OCS platform helps expand the donor pool, improve outcomes, extends transportation distances, and gives transplant teams more time and flexibility—all of which can lead to more successful heart transplants and more lives saved.
The National OCS Program (NOP) complements this technology by providing a dedicated network of clinical specialists, logistics experts, aviation resources, and operational support that helps transplant centers recover and transport donor organs efficiently and safely. Together, the OCS platform and NOP are changing what is possible in transplantation and bringing hope to thousands of patients waiting for a lifesaving organ.
At HeartBrothers, we know that receiving a transplant is only one part of the journey. Families often face significant financial and emotional challenges before, during, and after transplant. Thanks to the generosity of TransMedics, HeartBrothers is able to provide emergency patient grants that help cover travel, lodging, groceries, utilities, and other essential expenses during treatment.
Their partnership also helps sustain our HeartBrothers House, providing affordable lodging for patients and caregivers traveling to Boston for advanced heart failure care and transplantation. By easing the financial burden of extended medical stays, families can stay close to the hospitals and care teams they depend on while focusing on healing and recovery.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the entire TransMedics team for welcoming the HeartBrothers Board of Directors and giving us an unforgettable look inside the work that is saving lives and bringing hope every single day. Seeing this process firsthand reinforced why our partnership is so meaningful. Together, TransMedics and HeartBrothers are ensuring that patients not only have access to groundbreaking transplant technology but also the practical support, housing, and financial assistance they need throughout their journey.
Because behind every successful transplant is more than an organ—it is a story of hope, compassion, innovation, and a community committed to helping patients live their second chance to the fullest.
